When you have multiple domains and want to point these to your site you will need to do what’s called a 301 re-direct. Why would you have multiple domain names? Well for starters, you may have .com and .com.au extension of your company name. Alternatively, you may have a domain name that represents the generic equivalent of your product or service, such as www.manlyhairdresser.com.au or www.sydneytvrepairs.com.au. (More about this in our article Choosing a domain for SEO purposes.) A 301 re-direct is usually a pretty simple process and involves logging into your domain provider’s control panel. All domain providers login areas are different so this doesn't apply for all control panels, but typically you log into your control panel and go to a 're-direct' or 'domain re-direct' area. Once you're there you will need to fill out the details of the domains you would like pointed to your main website. Sometimes you will need to put in nameserver details (don't worry too much about this, just ring your hosting company and they will be able to tell you). If you have any questions, contact the company where you purchased your domain.
That's pretty much it.. there's not much to a 301 redirect for URLs. |
